February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, an annual initiative sponsored by the American Dental Association to promote the importance of oral hygiene from an early age.

The earlier parents pay attention to their children’s dental health, the better, according to Dr. Romer Ocanto, chairman and predoctoral director of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine.

Many parents are surprised to learn that their baby’s first trip to the dentist’s office should come as early as his or her first birthday.

‘Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that a child’s first visit to the pediatric dentist be as soon as the first `baby’ tooth appears,” Ocanto said.

”Baby teeth are important for several reasons,” he said. “They allow children to chew food properly and, therefore, influence nutrition. And they also guide the eruption of permanent teeth by saving space for them. This can influence language skills because some primary teeth have a role in children’s speech development.

”Ocanto said early dental care goes beyond taking care of baby’s first teeth. It sends the message that dental health is important.

STOCKTON - Maria Perez took her four sons to see a Stockton dentist Saturday and found out that three of them will need to have appointments later to get cavities taken care of.

That’s all right with her, though, because their dental treatments will be free, part of the annual Give Kids A Smile Day, Feb. 3, which features free dental care from volunteer dentists.

“It’s very important, very good,” said Perez through a translator. “They only see a dentist when they’re in pain and need it.”

Saturday was a screening and education day for the community-service program, now in its fourth year under the sponsorship of the San Joaquin Dental Society. Families streamed into St. Mary’s Dining Hall, on West Sonora Street, for the checkups.

The families filled out health surveys and children got checked out by dentists wielding wooden tongue depressors and flashlights.

Those who needed emergency dental care were sent to the adjoining St. Raphael’s Dental Clinic, which also depends on volunteer dentists to provide free dental treatment.

MILFORD — Tired of seeing cracked or missing teeth, bleeding gums and broken smiles, Dr. David Goodman is giving student -athletes free custom-fit mouth guards.

Along with Dr. Alan Ko and Dr. Heidi Cook, Goodman’s West Street dental practice has invited varsity, junior varsity and freshmen athletes at Milford High School to come in for a fitting.

Athletes involved in contact sports are 60 times more likely to damage a tooth when not wearing a mouth guard, said Goodman, who specializes in cosmetic and prosthetic dentistry. Each athlete runs a 10 percent risk of dental injury each sports season, he said.

“It’s still a small percentage, but any percentage to a parent is not a good thing,” he said.

Dr. Harold Katz comes into Toronto this week like a breath of fresh air.

The bad breath expert, armed with a measuring device called a halimeter and a bag of onions, is here to tackle the subject of jungle mouth. Mouth rot, dog breath, halitosis is always on the tip of his tongue.

“How’s your own breath?” I asked him last week during a 7:30 a.m. phone interview. “Excellent!” he sang. “I never have morning breath.”

Well, the rest of the world does. North Americans spend half a billion dollars a year on products to freshen their breath — and that includes the TheraBreath System, a line of fresheners developed by Katz.

The former Los Angeles dentist who has a degree in microbiology will be measuring the breath of various Toronto volunteers — media included — during a promotional tour.
